North Down Borough Council Elections 1993-2011

The DUP were the big winners in North Down in 2011. They saw their share of the vote increase by almost five percent and managed to pick up three additional seats for a total of eleven. All three of their gains came at the expense of the UUP who saw their representation on the new council halved. The Greens lost their Bangor West seat (their previous candidate stood successfully as an Independent) but they were able to compensate with a gain in Abbey.

*Three of the four candidates who had stood under the label "Action '93" in 1993, and both the candidates who ran for the "Holywood Swimming Pool Campaign" in 1993, were also independent candidates in 1997. A change in legislation in 2001 made it impossible for candidates to call themselves "Independent Unionists" so the Independent category swells still further. However on the North Down Council web-site Alan Chambers describes himself as an Independent Unionist and Brian Wilson describes himself as a Community Candidate.
