Craigavon Borough Council Elections 1993 - 2011

Sinn Fein further consolidated their position in Craigavon by picking up two additional seats from their SDLP rivals and increasing their overall share of the vote by five percent. The DUP also picked up an additional seat in Portadown previously held by an Independent but lost another seat to the Alliance Party in Craigavon Central. Alliance return to the council after an absence of 14 years. Also of note, Craigavon had the highest portion of invalid ballots across Northern Ireland at 2.5%.

A fascinating set of elections. In 1993, SDLP and SF between them had five quotas but only four candidates; the beneficiary was Smyth of the Workers Party who thus became their only elected councillor in Northern Ireland. Casey left the SDLP not long after the election and was eventually the leader of the Labour group which was elected to the talks and Forum in 1996. In 1997 SF had more than two quotas, but only one candidate; the SDLP had three quotas but four candidates, who benefited from the SF surplus and were all elected. The 2001 election was unremarkable.
