Newtownabbey Borough Council Elections 1993-2011

The Alliance Party were the big winners in Newtownabbey in 2011. They managed to more than double their share of the vote and picked up three additional seats in Ballyclare, Macedon, and University (one from the UUP directly, one from a smaller Unionist group whose councillor had meanwhile rejoined the UUP, and one as noted below from the Newtownabbey Ratepayers Association). The DUP continue to dominate and were again just one seat shy of winning overall control of the Council. They lost a seat to Sinn Fein in Antrim Line but compensated with a gain in Macedon. Also of note was the demise of the Newtownabbey Ratepayers Association as a political force. Their sole councillor elected in 2005 has since joined Alliance and was successful in defending his seat in Macedon DEA.

*New legislation in 2001 made it impossible for candidates to describe themselves as Independent Unionists. The UDP and Labour groups missed the deadline and so also had to describe themselves as Independents. The two "Independent" candidates elected were both from the Macedon DEA: Mark Langhammer, who describes himself as "Labour", and Tommy Kirkham, who describes himself on the council's web-site as an Independent Unionist (though he appears in the official register of Political Parties as the leader of the Ulster Protestant League).
