Ards Borough Council Elections, 1993-2011

The DUP lost one of their seats to an Independent in Newtownards, thereby losing overall control of Ards Borough Council gained in 2005. Alliance picked up an additional seat in Ards East and at the council level managed to overtake the UUP in the popular vote. The SDLP fielded unsuccessful candidates in Newtownards and Ards East for the first time and managed to double their vote.

Only three of the four electoral areas in Ards voted in the 2001 local government elections; in Ards East the number of candidates (three UUP, two DUP and one Alliance) was equal to the number of seats (six), so no vote was held.
** A change in legislation in 2001 made it impossible to run as an "Independent Unionist", so a number of "Independent" candidates in 2001 had previously been "Independent Unionists", and the only successful "Independent" candidate, Wilbert Magill, is described as an "Independent Unionist" on the Ards Council website.
