Teaching datasets:
Learning by numbers
In 2013, Emma Calvert and Paula Devine, both based in the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work at Queen's University, received funding from the Higher Education Academy (HEA) for the project 'Learning by numbers: new open educational resources for teaching quantitative methods'. The project team created a suite of survey datasets and associated teaching and learning resources which are available online to both students and instructors of quantitative research methods and analysis. These resources are aimed at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. These teaching resources were developed as part of a 2012-3 HEA Social Sciences strategic project: teaching research methods. Please note that these datasets are only available in SPSS .sav format. Each dataset is accompanied by a document providing technical notes and a data codebook. In addition, teaching workbooks are available for both the 2012 LGBT and the 2003-12 YLT teaching datasets. These workbooks contain instructions for simple descriptive analysis with SPSS screenshots. They are intended to support independent study for undergraduates. If you wish to request a copy of the workbook/s (in pdf), please email Dr Emma Calvert at e.calvert@qub.ac.uk.
