PhD Students

There are three PhD students currently associated with the ARK Ageing Programme:

  • Susan Hughes, School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences, Ulster University
  • Murchana Kaushik, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Ángel Leira Pernas, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, Queen’s University Belfast

Three students have now completed their PhD, and each focused on a different ageing-related theme.

  • Alexandra Chapman, School of Criminology, Politics and Social Policy, Ulster University,
  • Sarah Lawrence, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Elizabeth Martin, School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, Queen’s University Belfast

These students received additional funding from the ARK Ageing Programme, allowing them to buy equipment and books, as well as attend conferences.  For example, Sarah and Elizabeth attended the ESRC Research Methods Festival held in Oxford in July 2014.  Sarah attended the annual conference of the British Society of Gerontology in Southampton (September 2014).

Elizabeth Martin graduated from Queen’s University in June 2019, as did Sarah Lawrence in June 2022. Alexandra Chapman graduated from Ulster University in July 2019.

Elizabeth is currently a lecturer in Social Policy at Queen’s, whilst Alexandra is a lecturer in Social Policy at Ulster University.
