CAIN: Brooke-Mayhew Talks
The CAIN website contains a wealth of information relating to the Troubles in Northern Ireland. One key event is the Brooke-Mayhew Talks. From April 1991 until November 1992 a series of negotiations took place which sought to end the political stalemate in Northern Ireland. These Brooke-Mayhew Talks took their name from the two Northern Ireland Secretary of States, Peter Brooke and Sir Patrick Mayhew, who were closely involved in the preparation and operation of the discussions themselves. As well as the British and Irish governments, the talks involved the Ulster Unionist Party, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), and the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland. Ultimately the discussions ended without a breakthrough being made but their significance lies in the template they set for future negotiations later in the 1990s.
Further information on the Brooke-Mayhew Talks can be found on the CAIN website.

This event on 15 June focused on policy and practice relating to social care in prisons on the island of Ireland. In the first presentation - Ageing in Prisons in Northern Ireland: A policy update of social care provision for older adults in prison in Northern Ireland - Sarah Lawrence discussed findings from her PhD research in Queen's University Belfast, which focused on ageing in prisons. The second presentation - Making the invisible, visible: Social care considerations for female prisoners in Ireland through mental health law, policy, and practice insights - was given by mental health social workers, Ali Duggan and Aidan Cooney. A video and slides from the event are now available on the ARK site. Sarah Lawrence has also written a Policy Brief Ageing in Northern Ireland Prisons, which is also available on the ARK site.
