Introduction

Welcome to the September ARK newsletter, and we hope that you had a lovely summer. The newsletter highlights our activities over the new academic term. We are also looking forward to 2020, which marks the 20th anniversary of ARK. So watch this space for some celebratory events coming up!

PRONI records on CAIN

The CAIN web site provides a vital source of information on Northern Ireland's history since 1968. CAIN contains a selection of digital versions of public records that are held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). The records selected by CAIN are ones which relate to the conflict and politics in the region.

A further 340 documents relating to the years 1991 and 1992 have recently been added to PRONI Records on CAIN section. The newly released material provides a valuable insight into this period, mostly notably in relation to the Brooke / Mayhew talks of 1991-1992. In addition, the documents chart developments in Anglo-Irish relations for these years, ongoing discussions around various political and security matters, as well as important issues such as fair employment, the Irish language and community relations.

The 2019 NI Life & Times survey is now live. The Young Life & Times and Kids' Life & Times will be going live soon. So if you're asked to participate in these surveys, please take part. Your views are very important to us.

Publications

Our latest Research Update is Citizenship practices and political literacy in young people. Written by Alan Smith, Una O'Connor, Jessica Bates from the UNESCO Centre at Ulster University, the Update is based on data from the 2018 Young Life & Times and Kids' Life & Times surveys. This report explores citizenship topics covered in school, opinions about changing the voting age, and attitudes towards sovereignty and how Northern Ireland should be governed.

ARK produces a range of publications, including Research Updates and fact sheets. Most of these are available online. For a full list of publications, as well as links, visit our Publications section.

This seminar will focus on the work of Dementias Platform UK (DPUK), which was set up to discover new ways to understand, diagnose, and treat dementia. DPUK brings together the information of over 3 million people from 47 long-term studies of health.

Sarah Bauermeister (DPUK, University of Oxford) will highlight the opportunities of the DPUK Data Portal for researchers and introduce a selection of DUPUK projects exploring topics such as childhood adversity and adult outcomes in later life, comorbidity of cognitive decline and poor mental health.

The seminar will take place on Wednesday 9 October, from 2.15 to 3.30, in the Senate Room, Lanyon Building, Queen's University Belfast. Tea/coffee will be available at 2pm. The event is free, but places must be booked in advance by emailing e.gray@qub.ac.uk by Friday 4 October.
