Welcome to the May newsletter. This month we are launching the findings of the 2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey. You can find out more about two special launch events below. We're also excited to introduce three new members of ARK team.
 

2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey results

The 2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times (NILT) survey recorded the attitudes of 1,397 people living across Northern Ireland to key social issues, including mental health, COVID, criminal justice system, and good relations. Results from all questions, as well as the questionnaire, dataset and technical reports will be made available on the NILT website on 26 May 2022.

Attitudes to poverty, income inequality and social security

Rising prices and the cost of living crisis have had a strong impact on all our lives over the past year, but especially those already struggling to make ends meet. In this timely seminar, Goretti Horgan, Ann Marie Gray, Sabrina Bunyan and Mark Simpson (Ulster University) will use data from the 2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey to explore public attitudes to poverty, income inequality and social security.

Public opinion and Northern Ireland's constitutional future

An event on 26 May will explore will present newly released findings from the 2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey in relation to the constitutional future of Northern Ireland. Held in conjunction with UK in a Changing Europe, speakers include Katy Hayward, Ben Rosher and Paula Devine. In addition, Professor John Curtice will explore how attitudes in Northern Ireland compare to the rest of the UK after Brexit.

Attitudes to mental health and suicide

In this new Research Update, Siobhan O'Neill (Northern Ireland's Mental Health Champion), Margaret McLafferty and Paula Devine explore public attitudes to mental health and suicide in Northern Ireland, based on data from the 2021 Northern Ireland Life and Times (NILT) survey. This Research Update was published to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week.

Full results from the 2021 NILT survey will be made available on 26 May 2022.

Welcome to new ARK team members

We are very pleased to welcome three new members of the ARK Team:
  • Alexander Chapman is based in the School of Applied and Social Studies at Ulster University
  • Elizabeth Martin is based in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Belfast
  • Nora Poloni Gallagher is based in the School of Applied Social and Policy Studies at Ulster University, and will work on the 6th Northern Ireland Peace Monitoring Report
Both Alexander and Elizabeth completed their PhD research as part of the ARK Ageing Programme.
