Violence experiences of 16-year olds in Northern Ireland.

A Research Update on 16-year olds' attitudes to, and their experiences of, gender-based violence is now available. The data were collected as part of the 2022 the Young Life and Times (YLT) survey, and the question module was funded by the Executive Office (TEO). The research update complements the 2022 Statistical Bulletin published by the TEO on this dataset. Through the YLT and Northern Ireland Life and Times (NILT) survey, ARK continues to inform the development of policy in Northern Ireland to end violence against women and girls.

Political Attitudes 25 Years after the Agreement

In a new Research Update to mark the 25th anniversary of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement, Katy Hayward and Ben Rosher (Queen's University Belfast) reflect on findings from the 2022 Northern Ireland Life and Times (NILT) Survey. 7 out of 10 respondents think that the 1998 Agreement remains good for Northern Ireland, though a majority now think it should be reformed. However, the survey also shows declining confidence in devolution, growing anticipation of Irish unification, and high levels of distrust in political organisations and institutions.

Please note that the full set of findings from the 2022 NILT survey not be publicly available until 1 June 2023.

ARK event: Poverty in Northern Ireland

The upcoming event titled Poverty in Northern Ireland: Where are we now? will provide an opportunity to honour Professor Eileen Evason's work while assessing progress made to reduce poverty rates 25 years after the Good Friday Agreement. Despite the introduction of the Welfare Reform Mitigation package in 2016, the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect low-income households. The event will focus on social and economic inequalities, exploring potential solutions with a panel of policy and research experts. It will be held on April 26th from 2:30 pm to 4 pm at Ulster University's Belfast Campus Room BD-03-002. Please click here to register
