Age Encounters is a network of researchers, academics and practitioners with an interest in age. Each ‘age encounter’ has presentations from speakers from different sectors, along with time to chat over coffee.

The event on a very sunny day in June focused on combatting loneliness in later life.  We were very pleased to collaborate with U3A Foyle, and the ‘Age Encounter’ was held in their premises in Derry/Londonderry.

There were three speakers:

  • Robert Hagan (Ulster University) focused on the theoretical background to loneliness and social isolation. View the video and powerpoint slides
  • Jim Simpson, an active U3A member, talked about his life after retirement, and why he joined U3A.
  • Paddy McEldowney, CEO of Easilink (a rural community transport provider) highlighted the importance of community transport schemes in combatting loneliness and social isolation. View the video
